Edgewood Recognizes Summer Readers

Edgewood  LMS Jenn Quirk hosted an ice cream social for students who participated in the New Haven Free Public Library summer reading program. The program was conducted in conjunction with the New Haven Public Schools summer reading program.

More than 70 students were treated to ice cream and received certificates for participating in the reading incentive program.

Metro Recognizes Summer Readers

Metropolitan Business Academy LMS Charline Cupole offers everything from bookmarks with candy to flashdrives for students who completed summer reading. Names are posted on the front door of the library media center.

HSC Students work on Science Tasks in LMC

HSC library media specialist Fran Pierson helps students research genetically modified foods in the media center. Students created informational pamphlets about genetically modified foods to share the information they researched. 

Cross Library Media Specialist Helps with History Day

Three Wilbur Cross History Teachers challenged their students to choose a topic on Debate and Diplomacy to enter this competition in one of the categories. The teachers, Al Meadows, Eden Stein and Orah Bilmes brought their students to the library to learn the research process from Sharman Tait, Library Media Specialist.

The Connecticut History Day New Haven District competition took place at Wilbur Cross High School on Saturday, March 26, 2011. Wilbur Cross High School was represented by eleven students who had entries in six categories: Senior Group Documentary. Senior Group Exhibit, Senior Individual Exhibit, Senior Papers, individual Website and Performance.  Ten of these Cross students advanced to the Connecticut State History Day competition in Hartford held on Saturday, April 30. In the categories of Group Documentary, Individual Website, and Individual Paper, six Wilbur Cross High School students won in their categories and will take their History Day projects to the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland on June 13, 2011.

Troup Students Write Almost 1,000 Book Reviews!

Rita O'Keefe, library media specialist at Augustus Lewis Troup School, selects two reviews each month from the Book Review Raffle Box at the circulation desk in the library media center.   Winner’s reviews must be well written and include a detailed summary and description of what the reviewers like or dislike about the book.  Students give the books a starred rating ranging from 1 to 5 stars.  Primary reviewers also include a drawing on their review.  Winners receive a gift card and school supplies. 

As of May 3, 986 entries have been submitted!

Troup Holds Gingerbread Man Literacy Night with Book Giveaway

Troup School had a literacy night where "The Gingerbread Man" was read to students and parents who received tips on reading with their children at home.  The event was called "Catch Me if You Can". 

Afterward a buffet dinner was served and students each made gingerbread houses to take home.  Free books were also available to students.  This literacy activity was for students in grades K-4. It was a collaborative event sponsored by the Parent Involvement Committee. 

Hill Regional Career High School Wins 2011 High School Book Bowl!
